MOREHEAD, Ky. — Coming off its bye week, the Morehead State football team will get back to Pioneer Football League action Saturday at Campbell. Kickoff from Barker-Lane Stadium in North Carolina is set for 4 p.m. ET.
The game can be heard live on the Eagle Sports Radio Network and the Eagle Empire App with affiliates throughout Eastern Kentucky.
Morehead State (3-3/2-1 PFL) ranks in the top two in the conference in passing and total offense, while Campbell (4-3/2-2) counters with the best defensive team in the league.
“This is a classic battle,” Head Coach Rob Tenyer said. “We know what we do best, and they know what they do best, so it should be a tough, physical game. I am excited because we are in a good spot coming off our bye week, and I believe our team has a lot of confidence. It is kind of a rubber match, if you will, because their coach (Mike Minter) and I both took over our teams three years ago. We beat them at their place two years ago, and then they beat us here last year.”
The Camels handed the Eagles a 31-24 defeat in Morehead last season, scoring a late touchdown. The Eagles outpaced Campbell 45-36 in Buies Creek, N.C., in 2013.
“Our bye week came at a good time in the middle of the season,” Tenyer said. “We used the time to rest and get healthy and we took a little time off too. But we came back this week and had a really solid week of practice. We are ready.”
Morehead State’s offense is led by the PFL’s top passer in junior Austin Gahafer. The Louisville native eclipsed the 7,000-yard mark for his three-year career two weeks ago versus Butler. His top targets, senior Justin Cornwall and junior Jake Raymond, have combined for 956 yards and 10 touchdowns with Cornwall hauling in a league-best eight scores.
The Eagle defense, which paces the conference in takeaways, gives up just 25 points per game. Senior cornerback Justin Grier has picked off a nation-best five passes this year.
Campbell has relied heavily on the running game this season, and tailback DeShawn Jones leads the PFL with 99 yards per game. Defensively, the Camels limit teams to just 249 total yards per outing, while MSU is averaging more than 400.
Following Saturday’s action, the Eagles host their final two home games in the next two weeks. Drake visits on Oct. 31 for a Halloween Bash, and league front-runner Dayton comes to town on Nov. 7.
