Labor Day, long identified as the unofficial end of summer, has arrived. Traditionally, the holiday is celebrated with cook-outs, reunions, picnics, parades and other customs. Hopefully, at some point, you were able to reflect on the role of the American worker and pay tribute to those that helped create the nation that we call home.
Speaking of celebrations, there is cause to celebrate a few of our athletic teams and individuals. First, congratulatory comments need to be extended to senior golfer, Reese Razor. On Monday, Reese finished in the top 3 in the 16th Region All A tournament at Hidden Cove. As a result, Reese qualified to play in the Touchstone Energy All A State Championship on Saturday, September 11th at Eagles Nest Golf course in Somerset.
Our soccer programs also gave us reason to celebrate over the weekend. The LadyCats went 3-1 for the week with the only loss coming to Mason County on Thursday. By defeating West Carter on Saturday, Coach Karin Moore and the LadyCats earned the 16th Region All A title for the first time since 2011. The game proved to be an exciting one, with Bath County trailing for most of the game. However, relentless offensive pressure by the LadyCats in the second half resulted in a game-tying goal by Cailyn Oldfield with 8:30 remaining in the contest. Despite numerous shots on goal in the final eight minutes, the ‘Cats could not find the net and the end of regulation found the teams still tied at 1-1. According to KHSAA, all tournament games must have a winner, so the contest entered the penalty-kick phase. Sarah Crouch, Cailyn Oldfield and Sadara Copher scored in the shoot-out and Deana Willoughby made two crucial stops to lift the ‘Cats to victory. With the win, the LadyCats improved their record to 7-2. The team will be on the road tomorrow at Rowan County, for an important district contest.
Like the LadyCats, the Wildcat soccer team also had a good week, going 3-1. After defeating Elliot County in the opening round of the All A on Monday, the Wildcats picked up a district win over Fleming County on Tuesday. The Wildcats, losers at Russell on Thursday night, were able to bounce back in the All A championship game on Saturday and defeated Menifee County by a final score of 8-3. In doing so, the ‘Cats captured their second straight 16th Region All A crown and improved their 2015 record to 5-2-1. Although the boys championship game lacked the excitement of the Bath/West Carter girls nail-biter, Menifee County was able to hang close and found a way to tie Bath County 3-3 at the half. Two quick goals by Elon Bartley to start the second half allowed the BC fans to rest easier and enjoy a night that eventually saw two championship trophies hoisted into the night sky. With no games scheduled for this week, the Wildcats will have time to practice and prepare for a grueling schedule that features home games with Mason and 16th Region power, East Carter.
With two tough losses this past week. the volleyball team saw its record fall to 1- 6. The LadyCats almost picked up their second win of the season on Tuesday, falling to Boyd County 3-2. In a close contest, the LadyCats won the first set by a score of 25-23 and the third set, 25-21. In the fifth and deciding set, the ‘Cats comeback fell short, losing the set 13-15. The team will have three consecutive home games this week and will play in the Dink Scott Invitational on Saturday in Montgomery County. The JV team continues to impress; the win against Boyd County was their sixth straight victory to begin the season. The team would suffer their first loss at Lewis on Thursday, but their record still stands at 6-1.
With their 36-8 victory against Mason County on Thursday, the 8th grade football team improved their record to a perfect 4-0. The seventh grade team lost their game on Thursday. Both teams will be back in action on Thursday when they host Rowan County.
The MS GBK program saw its eighth-grade team pick up its second win of the season on Tuesday in Lewis County. The sixth and seventh grade teams continue to improve but have yet to pick up a win. They will both get an opportunity this week when they host East Carter on Tuesday. This marks a change in the original schedule;with Carter County schools being closed tomorrow, the game was moved to Bath County.
There you have it- enjoy the rest of Labor Day!
