MOREHEAD, Ky. — Aryn Bohannon, who helped Morehead State to four consecutive Ohio Valley Conference regular-season volleyball championships from 2010-13, has joined the coaching staff as the volunteer assistant. She will handle a variety of tasks and responsibilities moving forward.
“We are really excited about Aryn returning to our volleyball program,” Head Coach Jaime Gordon said. “She was an outstanding player and has the potential to be a great coach. Aryn will be a huge asset to our staff and student-athletes because she understands what it takes to win championships.”
Bohannon helped the Eagles to NCAA Tournament appearances in 2011 and 2013 after Morehead State won the OVC Tournament both seasons. MSU posted records of 104-31 (.770) overall, 67-3 (.957) in league play and 56-11 (.836) at Wetherby Gym during her four full collegiate seasons.
Morehead State reached 25 overall wins, 15 conference victories and 11 home wins in all four of Bohannon’s full seasons. The Eagles recorded 36 consecutive regular-season OVC wins from 2011-13, which marked the nation’s longest active streak. MSU also won 32 straight league road tilts.
“I want to thank Coach (Jaime) Gordon for this amazing opportunity,” Bohannon said. “We had a lot of mutual respect when I played, and I’m excited to be part of his staff. Coach Gordon has always believed in and trusted me. He’s been there during the good times and bad. That’s the type of person you want to work for. I am looking forward to this next chapter of my volleyball career.”
A native of Amarillo, Texas, Bohannon became just the 10th player in school history to collect 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. She registered a team-best 380 smackdowns as a senior, to go along with 362 digs and 38 service aces. She earned All-OVC honors her final two years.
In addition to a countless number of athletic accomplishments, Bohannon excelled in the classroom and performed many hours of community service. She tallied 4.00 grade point averages as a redshirt freshman and redshirt junior to earn OVC Academic Medals of Honor. That prestigious honor is awarded to the student-athletes who achieve the highest GPA in a league-sponsored sport.
“I played volleyball for many years, but I’m the first to acknowledge that young coaches have a lot to learn,” Bohannon added. “I’m excited to spend time with our coaching staff and see things from a different perspective. I feel like the transition will be easier because of my familiarity with our city, university and volleyball program. I know several people here, which will certainly help.”
Bohannon led Amarillo High School to Texas University Interscholastic League state championships in 2006, 2007 and 2008. Her club program, Advanced Amarillo, finished second nationally in 2008. She was also listed by PrepVolleyball.com as one of the country’s top recruits heading into 2009.
