Murray State sophomore Cameron Payne was honored before the Racers hosted Southeast Missouri State Thursday on his achievement of scoring the 1000th point of his career in Murray, Ky.
Head Coach Steve Prohm presented Payne, from Memphis, Tenn., a commemorative basketball. Payne joined the MSU 1000-Point Club in a 65-62 win over visiting UT Martin on Jan. 31, 2015.
Payne became the 41st member of the MSU 1000-Point Club when he hit a 3-pointer at the 14:08 mark of the first half and finished with 16 points to go with seven assists.
Payne zoomed past the 1,000 point mark with a 3-pointer early in the first half and became the second-fastest in MSU history in records that date back to the 1981-82 season. De’Teri Mayes (1998) did it in 48 games. Payne bested the 60 games by all-time scorer Jeff Martin, Sr. (1987) and the 62 games by Lamont Sleets (1983). Payne is the first Racer to reach 1,000 since Isaiah Canaan in 2012. Canaan, who is now with the Houston Rockets, took 74 games to reach 1,000.
Payne scored 16 points in the Racers’ 82-72 win over SEMO for their 20th win of the season and their 18th straight win.
He was the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year last spring and was named the league’s Preseason Player of the Year before this season started. Additionally, Payne is in the running for the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award and the Lou Henson Award which goes to the top mid-major player.
