WISE, Va. — The start couldn’t have been worse for the University of Pikeville women’s basketball team, hitting just one of its first 16 shots, but the Bears found their mark late to come back and beat UVa.-Wise 63-53 on Wednesday afternoon.
After the dismal start, it was UPIKE (10-4) in the end that shot better, hitting at 41 percent from the field compared to 32.8 for the Cavaliers which the Bears have now beaten twice this season.
UVa.-Wise (4-5) enjoyed a 16-6 lead eight minutes into the first half and was up by five at halftime. But the Bears opened the second half on a 12-3 run, taking their first lead on a jumper from Jamie Castle and eventually leading by as many as 10 points with seven minutes to play.
The Cavs, already shorthanded with seven available players, had Kehana Grayer foul out late after tallying a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. UVa.-Wise cut the deficit to five on a three from Katie Jo Dockery, but the depth of UPIKE took over to hold on for the win as Gibson’s 3-point play made it 61-51 in the final minute.
Gibson poured in 14 points to lead UPIKE and Khalilah Quigley joined her in double figures with 13. Four different Bears came down with four rebounds and Kandice Porter sent back three blocks.
Taylor Sandidge matched Gibson for the game high with 14 points and Dockery chipped in with 13, including three 3-pointers.
Quigley and Kelah Eldridge were the long-range leaders for UPIKE with three 3-pointers each, helping the Bears shoot 37.5 percent from three. Rebounds went in favor of the Cavs 43-39, but had 21 turnovers compared to 16 for UPIKE.
