Murray State sophomore Cameron Payne was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Monday in a vote of the league’s sports information directors.
The award marked a second straight week that the MSU sophomore has been honored.
Payne, out of Memphis, Tenn., led the Racers to a thrilling 81-79 road win Saturday at Evansville with a career-high 32 points. He hit 10-of-19 shots from the field including 4-of-7 from the 3-point line. He also added eight assists and a pair of steals.
His weekly OVC honor is the third this season for the Racers after teammate Jarvis Williams was honored on Nov. 24.
Payne was the OVC Preseason Player of the Year and is also on the preseason watch lists for the Bob Cousy and Lou Henson awards. The Cousy Award identifies the best point guard in the nation, while the Henson Award goes to the best mid-major player.
Through 10 games, Payne is second in the OVC with 19.2 points per game which ranks him 32nd in NCAA D-I. He is ranked 55th nationally with 5.2 assists per game and he’s seventh in the country with 2.9 steals per game.
The Racers (6-4) are home this week for a pair of games starting Wednesday when they host Alcorn State at 7 p.m. in the CFSB Center. Saturday is a doubleheader day when the MSU women’s team hosts Jacksonville at 1 p.m. and men face Illinois State at 3 p.m.
The MSU ticket office has a special stocking stuffer deal where one general admission ticket to both games this week and MSU’s game (Dec. 30) with Alabama A&M is only $15. Call the ticket office for more information at (270) 809-3000
