Eastern Kentucky’s Asante Gist Named OVC Freshman of the Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball player Asante Gist has been voted the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Gist delivered a memorable collegiate debut in EKU’s season-opening 97-87 win over IUPUI on Friday night at McBrayer Arena. The point guard from East Orange, New Jersey poured in 21 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. He committed only three turnovers in 30 minutes of action.

Gist was particularly impressive from the free throw line, where he made 16-of-22 foul shots. His 16 free throws are the most by a Colonel in a single game since Jarelle Reischel sank 17 in a win at Savannah State last December.

Dating back to last season, EKU has now had the OVC Freshman of the Week in 10 of the last 18 weeks. Sophomore Nick Mayo won the award nine times last season and was voted OVC Freshman of the Year in March.

Gist and the Colonels host mid-major power UNCW tonight at 7:00 p.m. at McBrayer Arena.
