BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Two days in practice, and still without pads or even shells, the Hilltopper defense continues to shine and build on one of the nation’s best defensive turnarounds from a year ago.
Defensive coordinator Nick Holt’s squad was the second-most improved defense last year and one of the main cogs to the Hilltoppers 12-2 which ended with a conference and bowl championship, along with a No. 24 ranking in the final Associated Press poll. WKU was in the polls again on Thursday, coming in with 11 points in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll.
For Holt, the addition of Louisville transfers Keith Brown and Nick Dawson-Brents has had an immediate positive effect on team chemistry and even unexpected leadership from two one-year additions.
“(Keith Brown) has been in big games, and he’s played a lot of football at the highest level,” said Holt of his transfer at middle linebacker. “Everyone respects him, and we expect him to have a great senior year. (Brown and Dawson-Brents) have been well-coached, played at the highest level and come in as immediate starters and immediate impact players. They even had a lot of captain votes already.”
In terms of captains, head coach Jeff Brohm announced to the team on Tuesday the six captains as voted by their teammates. On offense, tackle Forrest Lamp enter his second season as a captain along with seniors Taywan Taylor and Anthony Wales. Defensively, the players elected safety Marcus Ward, and linebackers T.J. McCollum and Drew Davis, a special teams ace.
