PIKEVILLE, Ky. — The University of Pikeville women’s basketball team earned its highest ranking since Feb. 11, 2003 on Tuesday, coming in at No. 17 in the NAIA Coaches’ Top-25 Poll.
Pikeville was last ranked 17th 13 years ago and keeps pushing towards an ever higher spot at 16-0 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-South Conference. The Bears’ No. 12 ranking back in 2003 is their highest in program history.
The Bears helped their case nationally last week, earning their first two wins over ranked opponents of the season.
UPIKE topped then-No. 25 Lindsey Wilson 64-58 on Thursday before getting past then-No. 18 Cumberland (Tenn.) 73-70 on Saturday.
Campbellsville leads MSC teams in the poll at No. 2, followed by Shawnee State at No. 9, then UPIKE, No. 19 Cumberland and No. 22 Lindsey Wilson. The Mid-South leads the NAIA with five teams represented.
Westmont (Calif.) is the No. 1 team in the nation for a second straight poll, receiving eight of the nine available first-place votes and collecting 219 voting points to lead the way. The Bears picked up 115 voting points as they jumped ahead three spots from No. 20.
UPIKE is back in action later this week, travelling to St. Catharine at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday, followed by a trip to No. 2 Campbellsville at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
