The free throw line was the difference in Johnson Arena last night as the Morehead State Eagles ruined a career performance from Miguel Dicent as they fouled their way to a 78-72 loss to Green Bay.
Dicent scored 20 points to lead the Eagles but it wasn’t enough to overcome the team’s 25 personal fouls which led to the Phoenix making 22 of 36 free throws. MSU only shot 20 from the charity stripe, making only 13.
Foul trouble played a pivotal role in the defeat as senior guard Brent Arrington and Dicent each picked up four fouls early in the second half. Senior forward Anthony Elechi and junior forward DeJuan Marrero would join Arrington and Dicent with four fouls, as well.
With foul trouble an issue, the Eagles simply could not find any rhythm in the second stanza. They shot just 33 percent from the floor in the second half, while Green Bay shot 59 percent. The Phoenix also spent a lot of time in the second half at the free throw line, shooting 15-of-26 from the charity stripe. They shot 22-of-36 from the stripe for the game, while Morehead State shot just 13-of-20 from the line.
“We’ve been doing a good job of not fouling most of the season, but the last few games teams have been taking us one-on-one and spreading us out,” said Woods. “We do a good job with how we switch and stopping everyone’s offense, but we need to get better at guarding the ball in one-on-one situations.”
