MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Morehead State women’s basketball suffered its third straight loss in a 94-56 defeat to the West Virginia Mountaineers Wednesday evening at WVU Coliseum.
The setback for the Eagles (3-5) was their third straight on the road, and for West Virginia (5-2), it was its third straight win. The Mountaineers remained undefeated at home for the year.
“The first quarter was probably our best quarter of basketball this season, but the third quarter was our worst quarter of the season,” said Head Coach Greg Todd. “We executed so well in the first quarter and made it an interesting game at the half. But in the third, we played like we were satisfied from the first. I’m very disappointed in how we played after the half.”
The Eagles took it to the Big 12 powerhouse Mountaineers during the first half, leading as much as 10 in the second quarter. Sophomore forward Eriel McKee and junior forward Shay Steele combined for 27 points in the first half. WVU answered as it ended the second quarter on a 20-8 run to go up at the half 42-38. The deciding part of the contest occurred in the third quarter when MSU was outscored 34-8.
McKee finished the night with 17 points and nine rebounds. Steele followed her teammate with 12 points and six boards. Junior guard Kay Kay Tate finished with a career high seven rebounds and also added seven points and three assists.
Bria Holmes led the hosts with 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Lanay Montgomery pulled down 18 of the Mountaineers’ 62 rebounds. The Eagles secured 41 boards.
The win was recorded as victory No. 302 for WVU Head Coach Mike Carey, surpassing the school’s coaching legend Kittie Blakemore for the most wins all-time at WVU.
MSU will travel to Nashville, Tenn., for a Saturday afternoon affair against Lipscomb at 2:30 p.m. ET. The matchup is a return game from last season when the Bison squeaked by with a 61-59 victory at Johnson Arena.
