PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Quan Weaver rushed for 146 yards, but the University of Pikeville failed to punch the ball into the end zone in a 22-0 loss to visiting Georgetown on Saturday at the Hambley Athletic Complex.
Weaver wraps up the season with 1,566 yards on the ground, giving him the program record for a single season. But the Bears (5-6, 3-2 MSC East) fell just short of winning a share of their first Mid-South Conference East Division title as Georgetown (6-4) claims it with a perfect 5-0 mark.
The Tigers will have to wait and see if they make it into the top 20 of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll on Sunday, as teams must be ranked among those teams to potentially qualify for the national playoffs.
Defense was good on both sides Saturday as Georgetown only outgained UPIKE 308-288, but the Tigers were able to sustain drives a little longer and make plays in the red zone to build a 15-0 lead at halftime.
UPIKE only allowed one more touchdown in the second half, but the offense just couldn’t get in a rhythm as two fumbles and an interception hurt its cause.
On its best drive of the game, the Bears marched down the field 84 yards on 10 plays late in the second quarter, including a 36-yard catch by Jaleel Bryant. But Weaver was stopped at the one on fourth down and the Tigers were able to run out most of the clock.
Any chance of a comeback in the second half was hampered when UPIKE’s Damir Karapandzic was unable to get off a punt for the second time in the game, instead throwing a pass to an ineligible receiver and giving Georgetown the ball on the 27. It took just four plays from there for Terry Johnson to run in from a yard out for the final score.
UPIKE only got into Georgetown territory one other time when Jack Hopkins recovered a fumbled kickoff return. But after gaining a first down at the 20, Weaver had three carries during the series, but the Tigers defense was too strong, stopping him on fourth and two.
R.J. Rosemond Jr., completed 14 of 23 passes for 102 yards and gained 32 rushing yards as well. Elijah Bell caught five passes for 32 yards and Weaver caught four for eight.
Georgetown’s Ozzie Mann threw for 174 yards and a touchdown with one interception while completing 19-of-25 passes. Alan Williams caught six of them for 60 yards and Kyle Longworth had the lone touchdown grab of 19 yards.
Arthur Williams and Hopkins led the Bears’ defense with eight tackles each, while Richard Grimes posted a game-high nine stops for the Tigers.
