Morehead State hosts rival Marshall Tuesday night

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Morehead State men’s basketball team returns home to face rival Marshall on Tuesday night. Tip-off is set for 7.00 p.m.

The Eagles (2-1) went 1-1 on the road last week, falling at Illinois State, 67-66, on a buzzer beater, and then downing Northern Kentucky, 64-56. The Herd (0-1) fell 84-74 in their opener at Tennessee on Thursday night.

The contest will air live on the OVC Digital Network. It will also broadcast on the Eagle Sports Network with Chuck Mraz and Jason Blanton calling all of the action. The radio network includes WIVY-96.3 FM and several affiliates throughout eastern Kentucky. A live audio stream can be found on MSUEagles.com and the Eagle Empire app.

A BIG ROAD WIN AT NKU
Morehead State outscored NKU 11-2 in the last six minutes of the game as they pulled away to a 64-56 win at BB&T Center. Junior guard Corban Collins led the way with 22 points, which tied a career high. Last year, the Eagles went 2-6 in non-conference road games with wins over Marshall and Central Arkansas.



THE INTERSTATE 64 BATTLE
Tonight’s contest will be the 97th meeting between Marshall and Morehead State. Marshall owns a 50-46 advantage in the series, but the Eagles have won the last two. MSU won last year (11/26/15) at the Henderson Center, 77-68, as former guard Angelo Warner led the way with 23 points. The only four active players to participate in that game were Corban Collins, Brent Arrington, Miguel Dicent, and Lyonell Gaines. Two years ago (11/17/13), the Eagles won 102-94 in OT at Johnson Arena. Arrington was the only active player in that game and he had a team-high 24 points.

SCOUTING THE HERD
Marshall enters tonight’s contest with a 0-1 record, falling in their lone contest at Tennessee, 84-74. The Vols utilized a 33-6 run in the second half to come from behind and get the win. Junior forward Ryan Taylor led the way for the Herd with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Marshall went 11-21 last year and were 1-12 on the road.

THE FLOOR GENERAL
Junior guard Corban Collins is leading the team in scoring with 14.0 points per game. He tied a career high with 22 points in the 64-56 win over NKU. He played all 40 minutes in the win, which marked the second-most minutes he has ever played and the only time in his career that he has played every minute. He played 43 minutes in the 75-72 overtime loss at UT Martin on 1/10/15. In the loss at ISU, he missed the final seven minutes of the game after fouling out. Against NKU, he knocked down a season-high 4 three-pointers. His career-high was 6 threes against Ohio State on 12/13/14.

THE NEW GUYS
Junior College transfers Xavier Moon and DeJuan Marrero rank second and third in scoring for the Eagles. Moon ranks second off the bench with 12.7 ppg and had a career-high 18 on Monday at ISU, knocking down his first seven shots. Marrero is tied for third, averaging 8.7 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds. He had 16 points and 8 rebounds in his first career start at ISU.

HITTING THE GLASS
On Monday night, the Eagles outrebounded Illinois State, 37-27. They finished with 18 offensive boards, limiting ISU to just 7. They had 11 second chance points to ISU’s 4. In their first 3 games, they are outrebounding their opponent by 7.3.
