Morehead State Dominates Southern Mississippi 61-46

Morehead State led all but 15 seconds as the Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season with a 61-46 win over Conference USA member Southern Mississippi.

Eagles head coach Sean Woods wasn’t happy with his team’s shooting peformance, but was happy with the defensive effort.

“We didn’t shoot particularly well today, but we shared the ball exceptionally well and shots just didn’t fall,” said head coach Sean Woods. “I respect (Southern Miss) Coach (Doc) Sadler. He doesn’t really have the personnel he wants right now so he packed it in and made us knock down shots. We dominated on the glass like I wanted us too, and we played very good defense. I can’t really ask for much more than that.”

The Eagles started the game on an 8-0 run and never looked back, leading the entire way. They led by as many as 24, at 60-36, with just under four minutes to go.

MSU finished the game shooting 38 percent from the field, compared to Southern Miss’ 34 percent. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 43-24, led by junior DeJuan Marrero, who finished with six boards.

Morehead State dominated the game down low, outscoring Southern Miss, 24-4, in the paint.

Sophomore guard Miguel Dicent and junior guard Corban Collins led the Eagles in scoring with 12 points each, they also finished with a team-high four assists.

“We defended really well today, and that helped us on the offensive end,” said Dicent. “The beauty of our team right now is that we are very deep. Everyone who comes in knows their role, and we are starting to play really well together.”
