Penalty Kick Helps Cumberlands Defeat UPIKE Men’s Soccer 2-0

PIKEVILLE, Ky. — A pair of fouls inside the box led to two penalty-kick goals for Cumberlands as it topped the University of Pikeville men’s soccer team 2-0 on Tuesday night at the Bob Amos Complex.

A UPIKE player was called for running into Patriot keeper Ahmed Ghatwary in the 39th minute, leading to Cam Philpot dropping a PK past Tait Torstensen in the bottom left side of the goal.

That free chance was the only goal of the first half, then in the final 45 minutes Cumberlands struck again. This time it was a penalty kick resulting from a handball inside the box. Jack Cousin took the kick this time, going for the bottom left once again in the 79th minute.

Torstensen had an otherwise solid night, scooping up five saves as the Patriots outshot the Bears 14-4 overall and 7-1 in shots on goal.

Philpton led the game with five shots, putting three on target, while four different UPIKE players took a shot each. Only Hayden McCloud put one on target on his 77th-minute attempt.

Cumberlands dominated possession, leading to a lack of offensive chances for the Bears. Ghatwary finished the game having to make just one save in a full 90 minutes. UPIKE did have an advantage in fouls at 15-10, while the Patriots had the only three corner kicks of the night.

UPIKE was down by just one goal for 40 minutes, but failed to get in position to tie things up. The Bears drop to 2-8 overall and 0-5 in Mid-South Conference play, while Cumberlands improves to 8-5-1 overall and 2-3 in league play.
