Morehead Volleyball Heads to UT Martin & SEMO

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Following their most impressive win of the season, the Morehead State volleyball team hits the road to face UT Martin (6-15, 2-2) on Friday night at 7 p.m. and Southeast Missouri (5-12, 1-3) on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Last week the Eagles went 1-1, falling to EKU on the road in three sets and then downing Austin Peay in three sets on Senior Day.

“The win against Austin Peay was definitely our best performance,” said head coach Jaime Gordon. “When you look at statistics and the way that we were able to pull things out in crucial situations, that was really solid for us. We had a good balance of offense. Hannah Sigala had a great match, Merideth Jewell came back and played the way she had been earlier on in the season, and we got some great support from Sydney Schuler, as well.”

In the win over the Governors, they recorded 52 kills while hitting .408. Jewell had a team-high 18 kills en route to being named OVC Newcomer of the Week for the fourth time, but the story of the match was Sigala. Just hours after her mother passed away following a courageous battle with cancer, the senior recorded a season-high 16 kills, while hitting a career-high .682. Many in the crowd wore shirts that read #SigalaStrong, symobolizing the strength of Hannah and her mother.

“We had an opportunity to honor Hannah on Saturday and the team and the community just rallied around her,” said Gordon. “We had an outstanding outing against Austin Peay, so hopefully we can maintain some of that momentum. Our offense was very strong and that will be the key for us as we hit the road in OVC play.”

Now following an emotional weekend and an impressive victory, Morehead State must turn their attention to UT Martin and SEMO.

“It’s always a challenging road trip for us because of the two locations and they’re both volleyball-specific facilities, so they have a very intimate feel which gives them a real home court advantage,” said Gordon. “And we have back-to-back road trips, but we scheduled our preconference to help prepare us for this. Earlier in the season, we went on an east coast trip one weekend and followed that with a trip out west, which should make this easier on us.”
