Dy’Shawn Mobley (Former UK Player) is returning to Commonwealth Stadium, but this time he is playing for Eastern Kentucky University.
The irony lies with Mobley’s transfer from Kentucky came after what appeared to be a breakthrough finish to his sophomore season.
Mark Stoops’ first season in 2013, the final two games against Georgia and Tennessee, Mobley rushed for 235 yards on 27 carries. But he used it as a triumphant farewell to UK and a springboard transfer to EKU.
He had only gotten 16 carries in the previous 10 games though, he saw the way Stoops and staff were recruiting and Jojo Kemp was leading the way in rushing that season. So he decided to let the coaches know he was enrolling at EKU.
This coming Saturday night, he will be back at Commonwealth. Although this season has been a little slow going for Mobley, being hampered by a hamstring injury, he is expected to play against the cats Saturday. He piled up 1,800 yards rushing and receiving for the Colonels last season.
Mobley was the Ohio Valley Conference offensive player of the year in 2014 and a preseason FCS All-American this year. EKU has provided the 6 foot 225 lbs Mobley, who set a Tennessee high school record with 3,068 yards and 48 touchdowns as a senior, exactly the opportunity he was looking for.
He has legitimate pro potential – NFLDraftScout.com lists him just outside its late round projections but he couldn’t produce a highlight reel from the sideline.
“The NFL is definitely a goal for me. I knew I needed more carries than I was getting from UK. I really wasn’t thinking about the NFL when I made the move, though. I really just wanted to play football. I couldn’t play football, couldn’t run the football, at Kentucky, because they had so many other running backs they were recruiting.”
Should be a great game Saturday night, with a little extra drama thrown in. I can’t wait to see what happens.
