MARTIN, Tenn. –The University of Tennessee Martin volleyball team topped visiting Eastern Kentucky University, 3-1, Saturday at Skyhawk Fieldhouse.
UT Martin won by scores of 25-23, 24-26, 25-18 and 25-22.
The teams battled back-and-forth as the first set saw five ties. UT Martin slowly chipped away at the Colonels’ lead tying the score at nine. Later in the set, Eastern Kentucky trailed, 23-20, as Celina Sanks and Rachel Vick dropped consecutive kills forcing a UT Martin timeout. The Skyhawks took two of the next three points to take the set.
In the second set, it was UT Martin who held an early lead before the Colonels worked their way to an 11-10 lead on a kill from Sanks. The lead changed three more times, before a timely kill from Vick put the Colonels up, 23-22. The Skyhawks took the next point to, again, tie the score before Eastern claimed three of the set’s final four points.
UT Martin built a seven-point advantage in the third set, as it was able to hold off the Colonels, before coming from behind in the fourth to win the match.
Sanks led the Colonels with a match-high 17 kills and added 15 digs. Vick added 10 kills, along with Johanna Boyer’s nine kills and 16 digs.
Madison Wessling, Kiah Cheatham and Lael Ceriani combined for 37 of 51 kills for UT Martin. The Skyhawks hit .213 on the day, while the Colonels hit .151.
The Colonels (3-18, 2-4 OVC) continue conference play Friday, Oct. 16 as they travel to Jacksonville State. Friday’s match is set to begin at 8 p.m.
