EKU Opens OVC Play At Home Saturday Night

RICHMOND, Ky. – The program owns 21 Ohio Valley Conference championships and the quest for No. 22 officially begins for the Eastern Kentucky University football team on Saturday when the Colonels open league play at home against Austin Peay.

The game will begin at 6 p.m. at Roy Kidd Stadium. Saturday’s game will mark the introduction of the Touchdown Terrace with beer sales.

The live radio broadcast of the game is available in the Richmond area on WCYO 100.7 FM, and can be heard worldwide on EKUSports.com. A live free video broadcast is available on OVCDigitalNetwork.com.

EKU has won eight straight OVC home-openers, including all seven under Head Coach Dean Hood. The Colonels have also won 13 straight games that come after an open week, which is the case on Saturday. Eastern was off last weekend.

Eastern Kentucky began the season with a 52-10 victory over Valparaiso at home. The EKU defense was stout against the Crusaders, limiting them to 38 yards rushing. Senior Stanley Absanon dominated nearly every phase of the game. On defense he picked off a pass and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown. On special teams he totaled 126 yards on five kick returns, including an average of 40 yards per kickoff return.

Eastern followed with a loss at FBS North Carolina State, a team that remains undefeated and on the edge of the top-25.

Newcomer D’Vonta Derricott has also shined for the defense. The transfer from Kansas State leads the team with 13 tackles. Offensively, senior wide receiver Jeff Glover has caught nine passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. He’s averaging 17.2 yards per catch.

Austin Peay is 0-3 this season, but the Governors’ last two games came on the road against FBS teams Southern Miss and Vanderbilt. APSU opened the season with a 28-7 loss to Mercer. Redshirt senior quarterback Trey Taylor has led the Austin Peay offense. He’s completed 60 percent of his passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns.
