PIKEVILLE, Ky. — After an electric punt return to open the season and a monster night of nine tackles and two sacks, the University of Pikeville’s Elijah Bell and Arthur Williams earned Mid-South Conference Football Player of the Week honors, league officials announced on Monday.
The weekly honors, Bell with the special-teams award and Williams with the defensive honor, are the first handed out by the conference this season.
MSC Defensive Player of the Week
Arthur Williams – UPIKE – Sr. – LB – Lancaster, S.C.
§ Williams led the Bears (1-0) to a 32-13 MSC East Division win over Bluefield (Va.) on Thursday night.
§ Posted nine tackles — seven solo — and had three tackles for a loss, including two sacks.
§ Williams posted one of the Bears’ seven forced fumbles in Thursday’s win.
§ Earns his first player of the week honor of his career.
MSC Special Teams Player of the Week
Elijah Bell – UPIKE – So. – WR – Lexington, Ky.
§ Bell scored the first touchdown of the game on a punt return in UPIKE’s win over Bluefield. He returned the punt 44 yards to give the Bears the lead.
§ Finished the game with two punt returns for a 25-yard average. Also returned one kickoff for 20 yards in the win.
§ Earns his first player of the week honor of his career.
