“Northern Kentucky University standout Cole Bauml was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.
Bauml earned first-team All-Atlantic Sun Conference and Atlantic Sun All-Academic honors after a breakout senior season. He led the team with a .350 batting average to go along with a team-leading 57 hits, 34 runs scored, eight home runs and 108 total bases. He drove in 22 runs and successfully stole 14 bases in 15 attempts in his senior year for the Norse.

“We are very excited that all of Cole’s hard work both on and off the field this season have paid off for him,” NKU head coach Todd Asalon said. “He put forth the effort required to become the best player he could be, and I cannot wait to see what he will do at the next level.”

The center fielder from Muenster, Saskatchewan, would have led the nation in doubles per game (0.60) if NKU players were able to be included in the national statistics as the Norse continue their reclassification process. Bauml recorded 25 doubles despite missing two weeks of action with an injury, which would currently tie for sixth nationally.

Over his two-year career with the Norse, he saw action in 87 games and earned 85 starts, including each of the 41 games he appeared in this season. He recorded a .343 batting average to go along with 43 doubles, 15 home runs and two triples.  He collected 60 RBIs and 63 runs scored, and he stole 21 bases in 26 attempts.

Bauml is the 12th Norse to be drafted under Asalon’s leadership and the second in NKU’s  Division I era. Last season, catcher Jordan Procyshen was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round.”
