PIKEVILLE, Ky. — After leading 1-0 for four innings, the University of Pikeville baseball team gave up seven runs in the fifth inning as Miami-Hamilton went on to win 10-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Johnnie LeMaster Field.

The Harriers had four hits in the eventful fifth and also got a boost from two UPIKE errors and two batters being hit by a pitch. Four of the seven runs were scored with two outs, including shortstop Triston Busick’s two-RBI single to left to make it a 7-1 lead.

With Bryce Carden leading the way from the mound, the Bears were able to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning and hold onto it for three more innings. Cody Chagnon drove in the run with a double while Carden gave up just one hit and struck out a batter in a controlled two-inning performance.

Trailing 8-1 in the bottom of the sixth UPIKE had new life, scoring three runs on four hits to make it a four-run game. Centerfielder Josh Bailey drove in one run on a double, left fielder Connor Osborne walked and came home on an error and first baseman Nicolas Gonzales hit an RBI single.

The comeback hit a snag in the top of the eighth as catcher John Lasota hit a two-run homer over the left-field fence to help Miami-Hamilton hold on for the win. Chagnon hit a sacrifice fly to get one run back in the ninth, but that was it for the Bears who drop to 12-11 on the season.

Miami-Hamilton’s (7-4) picked up the win, scattering seven hits for five runs with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Jared Masters, who replaced Carden in the third inning, took the loss after four runs came home on one hit with two strikeouts and three walks.

Bailey led UPIKE at the plate with four hits, an RBI, two runs scored, two stolen bases and a double, while shortstop Jacob DiThomas collected three hits and scored two runs from the leadoff position.

The Bears jump right back into play, traveling to Rio Grande (Ohio) at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
