PIKEVILLE, Ky. — For the second straight season, the University of Pikeville baseball team is off to a 9-4 start after finishing off a four-game sweep of Goshen (Ind.) over two days. The Bears held on for a 9-5 win in Monday’s opener before routing the Maple Leafs 12-3 in the nightcap at Johnnie LeMaster Field.
Freshman lefty Dalton Dahley threw five innings to pick up the game-one win. He allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and had UPIKE up 9-3 when he exited before the sixth inning.
Game two went to Josh Bailey, the regular centerfielder, who threw five innings as well, scattering five hits for three runs with a strikeout. The Bears were up 10-3 when Bailey took his exit as Jared Masters and Logan Sales each pitched shutout frames to seal the win.
It was a good day for Bailey overall as he went a combined 6 of 10 from the plate with six RBIs, three stolen bases, a double and two runs scored.
Some balls were leaving the park as well off of UPIKE bats. Third baseman Erik Manning belted a home run in the third inning of game one to give the Bears a 5-1 lead and catcher Zach Greene added a homer in the second inning of game two to put Pikeville in front of Goshen 4-2.
UPIKE pounced on the Maple Leafs in a hurry in the opener, adding four more runs after Manning’s blast to build a 9-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. Goshed scored single runs in the next three innings, but couldn’t string anything together for a comeback.
The Maple Leafs (2-9) scored their final run in game two in the fourth frame to make it a 7-3 Bear lead. UPIKE added five more runs over the next three innings to grab the comfortable win.
Up next on the schedule is a doubleheader with Asbury on Wednesday. Game time is to be determined and will be updated soon.
