MYTLE BEACH, S.C. — The search for warm weather took the University of Pikeville and West Virginia Tech baseball teams to Myrtle Beach where they split a Saturday doubleheader. UPIKE won game one 10-9 in nine innings, while the Golden Bears prevailed 2-0 in the nightcap.
While there were fireworks in the opener with another leadoff home run from Jacob DiThomas and a three-run shot from Cody Chagnon in the third inning, game two saw the UPIKE offense sputter, collecting just three hits in a shutout loss.
Scheduled for seven innings, the opener went into extras after the Bears surrendered a 9-4 lead over the fifth and sixth innings. Tied 9-9 after regulation, a scoreless eighth followed before Eric Tucker doubled and later scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Josh Bailey.
Ronny Herndon took over on the mound in the eighth inning with a tie game and allowed just two hits and no runs with three strikeouts to pick up his first win of the season.
Game two’s scoring happened in a hurry as West Virignia Tech got a leadoff triple from Hugo Rodrigues in the first inning who scored when the next batter in line reached on an error. The other run came in the third inning when catcher Trevor Lam hit a solo homer.
The Bears never threatened, finishing with just three hits in the game as Austin Southcott threw a complete game to pick up the win for Tech. Southcott’s line was no runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
UPIKE starter James Brooks dropped to an even 1-1 on the season after allowing one earned run on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
UPIKE and West Virginia Tech will play one more game at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
