BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU senior forward George Fant was named the Conference USA Co-Player of the Week Monday for his efforts in helping WKU pick up two league wins over Charlotte and No. 25 Old Dominion last week.
Fant shared the weekly honor with LA Tech’s Raheem Appleby. The Bowling Green, Ky., native is the third Hilltopper to earn a C-USA weekly award this season, joining T.J. Price and Justin Johnson, who earned co-player and co-freshman awards, respectively, after their performances at Ole Miss on Dec. 13.
Fant recorded his third- and fourth-straight double-doubles in key C-USA wins over Charlotte and No. 25 Old Dominion. Fant started the week with 18 points and 11 rebounds against the 49ers on Thursday, and he helped WKU knock off the Monarchs with a 24-point, 13-rebound performance on Saturday.
Fant shot 58.3 percent from the field during the week, and he was an impressive 14-for-20 (.700) from the free throw line to help the Hilltoppers move to 3-0 in C-USA play. Fant had just one turnover in 69 minutes during the week, routinely passing out of double-teams and finding the open teammate.
He finished the week averaging 21.0 points and 12.0 rebounds per outing.
WKU (10-5, 3-0 C-USA) is riding a five-game winning streak into games at Florida Atlantic and FIU this week, and the Hilltoppers have won nine of the last 11 games overall after starting the season 1-3. Saturday’s win over No. 25 Old Dominion was WKU’s first over a ranked team in the last seven tries, with the last coming over No. 24 Vanderbilt on Dec. 11, 2009. The win over the nationally-ranked Monarchs was also WKU’s first at E.A. Diddle Arena since topping No. 18 UAB on Jan. 25, 1986.
