PIKEVILLE, Ky. — Defense wins championships and it also wins non-conference matchups in early January as the University of Pikeville women’s basketball team limited Carlow (Pa.) to 26.9 percent shooting to win 93-48 on Saturday in the East Ky. Expo Center.
The game marked the final tune-up before resuming Mid-South Conference play at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday against Lindsey Wilson at home.
UPIKE (14-4) shot 53.8 percent from the field and Jamie Castle matched a season-high with 10 assists to help the Bears tally their best start to a season in recorded history. Carlow dropped to an even 5-5 with the loss which seemed inevitable once the Bears took a 31-11 lead 10 minutes into the first half.
It was only a 16-11 game before UPIKE took off on a 14-0 run that took the Celtics out of the game. There was a brief attempt to come back with a 9-2 run of the own, but ultimately the Celtics watched themselves trail by 27 points after another devastating 15-0 UPIKE run.
The Bears’ lead never went under 20 points the rest of the way, instead growing to as large as 50 with just over six minutes to play. Carlow’s lone lead in the game came at 3-2 when Erin DiSanti buried a three for its first points.
Kelah Eldridge led all scorers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while both Khalilah Quigley and Devin Conley added 14 each. Quigley also pulled down a team-best six rebounds and Conley connected on four threes. The Bears controlled the glass 52-32 overall.
Led by Castle’s passing, UPIKE did manage more assists that Carlow (27-14), but it wasn’t always pretty as the Bears also led the game in turnovers 19-18. Castle added two points, two rebounds and two steals to her 10 dimes. Kandice Porter was strong again around the basket, swatting back two shots and tallying 10 points on 4-for-4 shooting.
The Celtics were led by DiSanti and Lynzi Muller with 13 points each, while Samantha Simpson joined them in double figures with 11.
