20141209_192307

Pikeville defeated the Bobcats of Betsy Layne in a game that came down to free throw shooting.  In an up tempo first half with lots of pressing from the Bobcats, Betsy Layne shot 14 free throws to Pikeville’s 4.  This was the story of the game as the second half was a polar opposite with the Panthers shooting 18 in the second half , while Betsy Layne shot 6.

In the second quarter , both teams were able to settle down and find their offensive rhythms , trading three pointers in a neck and neck ballgame. Betsy Layne slowed the press down and on offense attacked the middle of the Panther defense, drawing fouls that sent them to the line.  Pikeville became more patient on offense and made adjustments to stop Betsy Layne’s middle attack. At halftime, Betsy Layne led the Panthers 34-28.

The second half belonged to the Panthers as they opened up the third quarter with a 17-6 run that the Bobcats were unable to recover from. The Panthers were led in scoring by Junior Blaine May, who finished with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Betsy Layne was led in scoring by Senior Peyton Case who finished with 19 points.  The fourth quarter was a repeat of the third , as the Panthers outscored the Bobcats 22-11 , with free throw shooting and rebounding being the strong points. Pikeville finished 19/22 from the free throw line while Betsy Layne shot 16/20.  Other noted scorers for the Panthers were Ryder Johnson , who finished with 12 points and 6 assists. Dalton Meade finished with 8 points and 7 rebounds while Zach Huffman had 13 points and 6 rebounds.  More noted scorers was senior Lakos Daniels as he finished with 16 points.

The Panthers are now 2-2 and host the Magoffin County Hornets  on Friday Dec. 12.  Betsy Layne drops their first game of the year at 2-1 and Betsy Layne will travel to Belfry on Friday night.
