Murray State sophomore Cameron Payne was named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week Monday in a vote of the league’s sports information directors.
Payne, out of Memphis, Tenn., helped the Racers to a pair of home wins last week which included a 93-81 victory over Western Kentucky.
He started the week with an 8-of-11 shooting day for 22 points against Brescia to go with seven assists and backed it up with 24 points and seven assists against WKU. Payne shot nearly 60 percent for the week from the field (16-of-27) and 50 percent from the 3-point line (4-of-8). He had 14 assists and six steals.
The OVC weekly honor marks the first this season for Payne, who was the OVC Preseason Player of the Year. Payne has also been recognized on the preseason watch lists for the Bob Cousy and Lou Henson awards. The Cousy Award identifies the best point guard in the nation, while the Henson Award goes to the best mid-major player.
Last season, Payne was named OVC Freshman of the Year and earned the OVC Freshman of the Week award nine times.
Through nine games, Payne is second in the OVC with 17.8 points per game and third with 5.0 assists per game. He’s first in the OVC and sixth in the nation averaging three steals per game.
The Racers (5-4) are taking final semester exams this week before they head out to play the Evansville Purple Aces Saturday. The 1 p.m. tip is at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
