MOREHEAD, Ky. — Brian Hutchinson, who is in his 10th full school year as the director of athletics at Morehead State, has been selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Council. The council oversees day-to-day operations for Division I. Its first meeting is set for January of 2015.
The 40-person council includes a variety of Division I athletic administrators, including conference commissioners and directors of athletics. Hutchinson is the lone representative of the Ohio Valley Conference and one of three individuals with ties to the Pioneer Football League.
Hutchinson, a current member of the NCAA’s Division I Football Championship Committee, has served in a variety of national positions. He spent time on the NCAA’s Football Issues Committee, in addition to its Recruiting and Personnel Issues Committees. Hutchinson is also a past president of the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association.
“We are glad Brian has agreed to serve in this capacity,” Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner Beth DeBauche said. “Brian’s knowledge of governance issues and his prior national involvement made him the perfect person to represent the OVC on this crucially-important council.”
Hutchinson spent five years as an associate athletic director at MSU, moved into an interim athletic director role in 2004 and assumed his current position in 2005. Under his leadership, the department has seen major improvements in facilities, student-athlete performance and staffing level.
A native of Louisa, Ky., Hutchinson earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Morehead State in 1996 and master’s degree in sports administration from the university in 2001. He and his wife, Elizabeth, also a two-time MSU graduate, have two sons, Benjamin and Riley.
