PIKEVILLE, Ky. — After averaging 28.5 points, three rebounds and three assists through two games, the University of Pikeville’s K.K. Simmons earned Mid-South Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honors, league officials announced on Monday.
The weekly award is the first of the season handed out by the conference and gives UPIKE its fourth straight, dating back to last season when Bruce Reed tallied three straight player of the week awards.
Simmons opened the week with 19 points, three rebounds and an assist with three 3-pointers in the 89-85 come-from-behind win over Shawnee State (Ohio) in the MSC opener on Thursday at the East Ky. Expo Center. Two days later he upped the ante with 38 points in the 113-100 win over No. 8 Georgetown.
The junior from Atlanta caught fire in that one, matching a program record with eight 3-pointers while shooting 10-of-16 overall from the field and hitting all 10 of his free throws. For the week, Simmons hit 16-of-17 shots from the stripe.
Simmons’ award gives UPIKE 27 players of the week in program history since the MSC started the honor in 2003. The Bears grabbed a program-best five weekly awards last season.
