Murray State’s Cameron Payne was named to the watch list for the Lou Henson Award as announced by CollegeInsider.com.
The Henson Award is given annually to the top player in NCAA D-I among mid-major teams. The award is named in honor of Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career D-I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.
The 2015 recipient will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Banquet on April 3 in Indianapolis, site of the 2015 men’s NCAA Basketball Championship.
Payne, a sophomore from Memphis, has already this fall been named to the Bob Cousy Award watch list, which is given to the top point guard in the nation. Payne was also the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Player of the Year.
Payne is coming off a tremendous freshman season with the Racers, one that led to him earning OVC Freshman of the Year honors, while he scored
16.8 points per game. He was just the second freshman in MSU history to score 500 points in a season. Payne was the MVP of the CollegeInsider.Com Tournament as he helped the Racers win the championship. He was named the SBNation.com Mid-Major Freshman of the Year and was a finalist for the CollegeInsider.com Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year award.
The Racers open the season Friday at home with the Houston Cougars. The evening begins with the Racer women’s team hosting Ohio at 5 p.m., and then the men’s team faces UK at 7 p.m. in the CFSB Center.
