SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego rushed for 281 yards and also scored four times through the air, to hand the Morehead State football team a 49-28 defeat on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
USD improved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the Pioneer Football League. The Toreros upped the series mark to 10-0 against the Eagles. MSU slipped to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the league.
Sophomore quarterback Austin Gahafer connected with junior wideout Tanner Napier for a 61-yard score on the Eagles’ first drive. San Diego punted on its first two possessions but then scored on four of its next five to take a 28-7 halftime lead. The teams were tied 7-7 after the first quarter.
USD running back Jonah Hodges rushed for a game-high 160 yards on 20 carries with a pair of scores. Dallas Kessman added 89 yards on 18 rushes. Quarterback Keith Williams tossed four touchdown passes and finished 15-for-25 for 217 yards.
Gahafer finished 24-of-41 for 215 yards and a pair of scores. Napier led the receivers with 77 yards, while sophomore slot man Jake Raymond caught the other touchdown, giving him four straight games with a touchdown.
San Diego totaled 499 yards, while the Eagles generated 366. Senior running back Rees Macshara rushed for a team-best 74 yards on 11 carries, including a season-long 49-yard scamper.
MSU sophomore safety Dominic Iori led the defense with 10 total tackles and a fumble recovery. Junior linebacker Luke Keller had eight stops, including two tackles for loss (both sacks).
Morehead State returns home Saturday to host Stetson. The home finale and Senior Day is set for 1 p.m. ET.
