MOREHEAD, Ky. — Malik Maitland, a 5-foot-11 guard from Father Lopez Catholic High School (Fla.), has signed a National Letter of Intent with the Morehead State men’s basketball program. He will be a freshman during the 2015-16 school year.
“We’re excited about the addition of Malik,” Head Coach Sean Woods said. “He’s a terrific person and very talented player. We lose three guards after this season, so Malik will provide depth and have an opportunity to compete for playing time.”
Maitland, a native of Daytona Beach, Fla., averaged an area-best 22.1 points, 5.8 assists and 2.8 steals as a junior in 2013-14. He is also a member of the Each 1 Teach 1 AAU program.
“Malik is a left-handed point guard who can do lots of things on both ends of the floor,” Woods said. “Don’t let his size fool you because he’s a special player. Malik is athletic and fits our fast style of play. He scores, passes and plays good defense.”
Maitland averaged 14.0 points, 5.6 assists and 4.9 steals as a sophomore in 2012-13. Father Lopez posted a 27-3 record that season. He has played on the varsity team since seventh grade.
“It’s an honor to be joining Morehead State’s program,” Maitland said. “I feel very blessed to be in this situation. The coaches and players have been great during the recruiting process. They seem like a family in everything they do, on and off the court.”
Morehead State is coming off a 20-win campaign for the fourth time in the past six years. The 2013-14 Eagles also earned a spot in the College Basketball Invitational, which marked their fourth postseason berth in six seasons and ninth in school history.
“The practices at Morehead State are pretty intense, but that’s what I want,” Maitland added. “I don’t want to just be good, I want to be great. Coach (Sean) Woods has said he will help push me to that next level, and that’s something I’m looking forward to.”
