PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Thanks to his record-setting performance in the 43-36 win over Murray State on Saturday, Eastern Kentucky University football player Dy’Shawn Mobley was named the national FCS Offensive Player of the Week by The Sports Network.
Mobley tied the OVC single-game record by scoring six touchdowns (five rushing, one receiving) in EKU’s comeback win over the Racers. Mobley finished the game with 324 all-purpose yards, the fourth-most by a FCS player this season. The native of Powell, Tennessee carried the ball 40 times for a personal-high 224 yards (5.6 yards per carry) and five touchdowns (also tying the OVC record in that category), which is tied for the most by a FCS player this season.
Mobley, a candidate for the Walter Payton Award, scored on runs of two, one, eight, six and one yards with the final two rushing scores coming in the fourth quarter as EKU overcame a 20-point halftime deficit. In the third quarter, the junior caught a screen pass and went 72 yards for a touchdown (the second longest play from scrimmage by an EKU player this season).
Mobley’s six total touchdowns and 36 points tied the OVC record originally set by Murray State’s Derrick Cullors in 1995 against Morehead State. His five rushing touchdowns tied the OVC record held by four other individuals – Jacksonville State’s DaMarcus James, Tennessee Tech’s Derek White, Austin Peay’s Daniel Williams and Youngtown State’s Paris Wicks. Mobley currently ranks fourth nationally (and third in OVC single-season history) with 19 rushing touchdowns, while also ranking fifth in scoring (10.9 points per game), 10th in rushing yards per game (124.7) and 16th in all-purpose yards (148.36 per game).
The other Sports Network national weekly award winners were Alabama State linebacker Kourtney Berry (Co-Defensive), Indiana State safety Mark Sewall (Co-Defensive), Sacred Heart linebacker James Rentz (Special Teams), Furman quarterback P.J. Blazejowski (Co-Freshman) and Abilene Christian running back De’Andre Brown (Co-Freshman).
College Sporting News, another major FCS media outlet, also selected Mobley as one of five FCS National All-Stars for the week of Nov. 17.
Eastern Kentucky (9-2, 6-2 OVC) wraps up the regular season this Saturday, Nov. 22 with its first-ever visit to Florida. The game will be televised by the SEC Network beginning at noon.
