RICHMOND, Ky. – Nick Mayo and Paul Jones have signed National Letters of Intent to play college basketball at Eastern Kentucky University, head coach Jeff Neubauer announced today.
Mayo is a 6-foot-8 forward from Oakland, Maine, where he plays for Peter McLaughlin at Messalonskee High School. Jones is a 6-foot-7 forward from Lake Worth, Florida, where he plays for Martin McCann at Palm Beach State College.
Mayo averaged 15.1 points and 13.6 rebounds per game his junior season, while helping lead Messalonskee to the Class A quarterfinals. He also led the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference in blocks at 2.5 per game. A very proficient free throw shooter, Mayo shot 81 percent during the season, making 68 of 84.
“Nick is an outstanding young man with a very bright future,” Neubauer said. “He is a skilled bigger player who excels as a shooter and passer.”
Mayo shoots well from three-point land. EKU has led the Ohio Valley Conference in three-pointers made five out of the last six years, and was fifth in the country last season.
During the summer months, Mayo competed in the AAU Division I 11th-Grade National Championships in Louisville where he was noticed by the EKU coaching staff. Mayo made his official visit to campus the weekend of Sept. 13 and watched the 2013-14 Colonels get their OVC Championship rings at halftime of the football game.
Mayo played AAU for the Maine Athletic Club.
Jones averaged 6.7 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 2012-13 for the Panthers. He grabbed 54 offensive rebounds and shot 60 percent from the floor during his freshman season at Palm Beach State. He did not play during the 2013-14 season.
“Paul brings a high level of athleticism to our program,” said Neubauer. “We expect him to rebound and block shots at a very high level. Paul is a humble and thoughtful young man whose best days are ahead of him.”
During the 2012-13 campaign, Jones had 10 double-digit scoring performances including a 24-point, 13-rebound performance against Cape Fear Community College (Dec. 19, 2012). He also had nine games where he had seven or more rebounds.
Palm Beach has already played four games this season. Jones has started all four and is averaging 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He has made 11-of-17 from the field (64.7 percent) and has blocked 13 shots.
The Colonels will open their 2014-15 regular season on Friday at home against Savannah State University. Tip-off at McBrayer Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. The team will unveil the 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship banner before the game.
