PIKEVILLE, Ky. — On Nov. 10, 2014, the University of Pikeville men’s basketball team has been invited to Western Kentucky to play the Hilltoppers at WKU, but the competition won’t end on the basketball court.

WKU has challenged UPIKE to see who can register the most students on the organ donor registry. The Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) has agreed to support the challenge, providing registry forms and information about organ donation. KODA will tally donors on Nov. 7 and the winning university will be announced at the game on Nov. 10.

Organ donation hits home for the UPIKE family and Men’s Basketball Coach Kelly Wells, an organ donor recipient. UPIKE is encouraging students, faculty and staff to participate in the challenge, on Oct. 22 at the annual Basketball Blast-Off. The free event, a showcase of the men and women’s basketball teams, begins at 8 p.m. at the UPIKE gymnasium.

Bears’ fans have several ways to sign up and save lives through organ donation. Registry forms will be available at blast-off and during the men’s basketball game at the Eastern Kentucky Expo on Oct. 27. Forms will also be available in the Student Services office on campus or by registering online at www.donatelifeky.org. Donors should be sure to click on the drop-down box and credit UPIKE by selecting the “UPIKE/WKU – UPIKE Fan” designation.

UPIKE and WKU are partners in education, recently announcing three health-related master’s degree programs available to students in Eastern Kentucky and providing WKU students with access to UPIKE’s Kentucky College of Optometry.
