MOREHEAD, Ky. — Marcus Fuggins, a 6-foot-9 post player with a 7-foot-6 wing span, has signed an athletic scholarship agreement with the Morehead State men’s basketball program. He has two years of college eligibility after transferring from San Bernardino Valley College (Calif.).
“We’re excited to add Marcus to the program,” Head Coach Sean Woods said. “He’s another impact player who can push us toward our goal of winning an Ohio Valley Conference championship. Marcus has a high basketball IQ and very good instincts on the court.”
Fuggins averaged 5.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots while shooting 54 percent from the field as a sophomore in 2013-14. He helped the Wolverines to a 29-8 overall record and runner-up finish in the 91-team California Community College Athletic Association.
Fuggins, a native of Moreno Valley, Calif., who weighs 250 pounds, spent the 2012-13 campaign at Howard College (Texas). He helped the Hawks to a 30-6 overall record, No. 11 national ranking and Western Junior College Athletic Association championship as a freshman.
“We were attracted to Marcus during the recruiting process for several reasons,” Woods said. “He has a 7-foot-6 wing span and has been a winner throughout his basketball career. In addition to having great size, Marcus has a lot of athleticism and toughness.”
His two junior college squads combined for a 59-14 overall record and 22-4 conference mark.
Fuggins spent the 2011-12 season at La Jolla Preparatory Academy (Calif.). He averaged 4.6 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks during the 2010-11 campaign as a senior at Westwind Prep, where he helped the Warriors to an Arizona state championship.
“Marcus has the potential to be a big-time defender,” Woods added. “He has the ability to rebound, which continues to be a staple of our program, and block shots. We also like Marcus’ work ethic. He will fit into our program and help us achieve our goals.”
Morehead State is coming off a 20-win campaign for the fourth time in the past six years. The Eagles also earned a spot in the 2014 College Basketball Invitational, which marked their fourth postseason berth in six seasons and ninth in school history.
