PIKEVILLE, Ky. – University of Pikeville senior shortstop Chaz Contreras was named a 2014 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete, officials from the national office announced on Thursday.
In order to be nominated by an institution’s head coach or sports information director, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved at least junior academic status.
Contreras is the first baseball student-athlete to earn the national honor from Pikeville dating back to the oldest available list from the NAIA in 2005.
Including all NAIA institutions, 257 baseball student-athletes received the scholar-athlete honor this season.
Contreras, a native of Gilbert, Ariz., finished 2014 with a team-best six triples to go along with eight doubles, 18 RBIs and a home run. He also swiped 21 bases and finished third on the team with 26 runs. Contreras started in all 51 of the Bears’ games, hitting .287 with a .425 slugging percentage.
