PIKEVILLE, Ky. – After being named interim athletic director at the University of Pikeville in December, UPIKE President Dr. James L. Hurley announced that Robert Staggs will take over the position in a full-time role heading into the 2014-15 season.

“I’d like to thank President Hurley and the hiring committee for giving me this opportunity,” said Staggs. “I look forward to getting started and working with our talented head coaches and administrators. This is a great time to be involved with this university.”

Staggs is entering his 19th year as part of the UPIKE athletic department, spending the last three as Associate Athletic Director, as well as serving 12 seasons as head coach of the softball program.

In his time at the school, Staggs has been head volleyball coach and an assistant with the football, baseball and men’s and women’s basketball teams.

The Pikeville native had been the school’s athletic director for two years starting in 2010 before devoting his full-time commitment to the softball program.

Staggs is an alumnus of Pikeville College and has received numerous accolades in athletics, including being named the Mid-South Conference Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2007 and the Kentucky High School Athletics Association Football Official of the Year in 2008.
