60th District Tournament: Pike Central Pounds Phelps 17-1

Pike County Central defeated Phelps in the 60th district baseball tournament action 17-1 Monday night. Pike Central will now face Belfry in the Championship game on Tuesday.

Central shut down Phelps in the first inning behind sophomore pitcher Charlie Cokley. The Hornets led off the game with a double from Bailey Hurley, but Hurley was picked off at second by Cokley. The next two Phelps hitters went down on strikes.

Pike Central was able to score 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning. Mac Justice led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch and stole second. Brad Elkins followed with an RBI single and was able to steal second. Andrew Fields knocked Elkins in and the Hawks led 2-0 after one inning.

The second inning didn’t go much better for the Hornets as they went down in order. Cokley struck out two Hornets hitters in his final inning of work. Cokley finished the game with 4 strikeouts, while giving up only 1 hit in his two innings of work.

Pike Central got the bats going in the bottom of the 2nd inning scoring 13 runs on 11 hits. The Hawks sent 17 batters to the plate. Central led 15-0 after two innings.

Cam Hamilton was on the mound in the 3rd inning for the Hawks and the results were no different for the Hornets as they were shut down for the third straight inning. Hamilton struck out Gavin Wolford to start the 3rd. Zack Francis then single for the Hornets only to have Davon Smith ground into an inning ending double play.

Pike Central added two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning with Zack Scroggins scoring on a wild pitch and Mac Justice adding an RBI single. Central led 17-0 after three innings.

After retiring the first Hornets hitter in the 4th inning, Hamilton gave up a double to Dalton Prater who eventually scored on a Kyle Sneed single for the Hornets first and only run of the game. Hamilton gave up one run on three hits and had one strikeout in two innings of work.

The Hawks were unable to score in the bottom of the fourth inning and the score remained 17-1. Brice Elkins came onto pitch the fifth inning and was able to shut down the Hornets allowing one hit and had one strikeout.

Pike Central finished the game with 17 hits and Phelps had only 5 hits.

Pike Central will now face #1 seed Belfry for the 60th District Championship Tuesday night at 6:00 pm at Pike Central Field.
